Arkansas spring game takeaways: Bobby Petrino's offense looks legit

The Arkansas Razorbacks held their annual spring game on Saturday, and there were plenty of storylines to follow throughout. From a new OC-QB combination in Taylen Green and Bobby Petrino to an offensive line searching for answers, there are a lot of questions heading into a pivotal 2024 season. Here's what we learned after the Red team's 38-12 victory.

Taylen Green flashes the downfield accuracy

The Boise State transfer seems to be Petrino's answer at quarterback in Year 1.

Hog fans have gotten used to seeing KJ Jefferson spin beautiful spirals downfield, and after Saturday's game, it seems that Green can be used in the downfield passing game as well. He went 17-of-22 with 243 yards and three touchdowns, but two of his best throws were touchdown tosses to Tyrone Broden and Andrew Armstrong in the back of the end zone. One scrimmage doesn't set his 2024 stats in stone, but Arkansas seems to be in good hands with its new signal-caller.

Bobby Petrino brings out all the stops

New offensive coordinator Petrino brings plenty of media attention to Fayetteville, but on the field, his new offense looks pretty solid. Petrino's power-spread offense wowed Arkansas for four seasons when he was head coach, and if Saturday's plays translate to the play sheet this fall, defensive coordinators may be in for a load of headaches.

Petrino's offense featured plenty of crossing routes and go routes on Saturday, along with plenty of read options, all play types that perfectly fit transfer QB Green.

Petrino is dangerous enough on his own, but with a QB that seems to fit his offense to a tee, the Hogs could make some noise on the scoreboard this fall.

Special teams is nothing special

Arkansas fans have been spoiled watching Cam Little drill clutch field goal after clutch field goal over the past three seasons. With Little testing the NFL waters this spring, Arkansas was forced to try senior Matthew Shipley at kicker. Head coach Sam Pittman decided that all extra points in Saturday's scrimmage would come from 40 yards out, which proved to be an issue for the new kicker. After knocking in the first kick off the right upright, Shipley proceeded to miss his next two kicks wide. It's only a spring scrimmage, but if Shipley is Arkansas' best option at kicker, it better hope it's well into the red zone before settling for three.
